A Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation study of over 2,000 people with type one diabetes found a higher proportion than expected suffering from depression .
Type 1 diabetes requires daily insulin injections to maintain blood glucose stability, making it a demanding disease to manage. Numerous trials and studies have linked both type 1 and type 2 diabetes with depression.
The chief executive of the foundation, Mike Wilson, said that of the study group one in ten children and up to 25 per cent of adults were suffering from depression.
He went on to say that confusion is a major problem amongst diabetes patients, and education is key for both the diabetes community and health professionals.
