Cystic fibrosis and diabetes linked

Mon, 18 Aug 2008
Experts in Tasmania have linked diabetes and cystic fibrosis in a groundbreaking new study that could see them improve life expectancy amongst sufferers of the disease .

The team found that 80 per cent of Tasmanians who have cystic fibrosis also tested positive for diabetes . Cystic Fibrosis can be a fatal illness that affects the sweat glands and mucous.

With a firm link between the diseases established, Dr. Roland McCallum reportedly commented that life expectancy amongst people with diabetes could increase considerably. He reportedly said: "They are now put on to insulin once or twice or four times a day and we are seeing benefits in their lung function, their weight is going back up and they are, we hope, going to do better for longer."
