Diabetics should have pneumonia vaccination

Tue, 19 Aug 2008
According to a research team from Denmark, people with diabetes should have a pneumonia vaccination. The researchers found ‘strong evidence’ that diabetes could be linked to a 25-75 per cent increase in risk of hospitalisation due to pneumonia.

The research team wrote in the journal Diabetes Care and reportedly claimed that the results: "emphasize the value of influenza and pneumococcal immunization, particularly for patients with longer diabetes duration, and the importance of improved glycemic control to prevent pneumonia-related hospitalization among diabetic patients."

The team investigated thousands of patients admitted to hospital with pneumonia, and found statistical increases in risk were likely amongst both type 1 diabetics and type 2 diabetics . The team reportedly concluded: "Our data extend previous studies suggesting that diabetes is a risk factor for pneumonia."
