A pioneering new study being run by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the University of East Anglia is calling for adults with diabetes to come forward to help prevent others from developing the disease.
The study encourages people with type 2 diabetes to provide support to those who are at risk of developing diabetes . So far, some 40 local residents with diabetes have come forward to be involved in the study. This team will be trained as mentors, with the aim of supporting and motivating study participants.
The chief investigator, Mike Sampso, reportedly commented: “Diabetes is one of the big public health challenges of our time; and if we can demonstrate that with the help from members of the public as trainers, we can make the study a success, the savings in human and financial cost for the health sector will be substantial.”
