According to a recent Australian government report, health care spending could triple in the next quarter of a century, as the obesity epidemic and ageing population further increases cases of diabetes and dementia .

The report indicates that expenditure could soar to $246 billion by 2033, up from $85 billion in 2003. The research was conducted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare .

The author of the report, economist John Goss, reportedly commented: "The diabetes situation is fairly bad in Australia because of the increase in overweight and obesity . The diabetes projections that we have there assume that obesity epidemic we've seen will continue on for the next 30 years."
