According to recent reports from India, some 15 per cent of pregnant women in India are developing diabetes, and therefore increasing the risk of their children themselves developing the disease . Malnutrition was blamed as the major cause of the rise in gestational diabetes cases.

Further factors blamed for the upsurge were genetics, sedentary lifestyles and being undernourished. These aspects were pointed out by experts at a diabetes summit in Chennai.

Chittaranjan Yajnik, a director of the diabetes unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Pune, India, reportedly commented: "If a young girl is healthy, she produces eggs that are appropriately nourished. If there is a problem there, you can be sure that there is a problem for the next generation."

In western countries, gestational diabetes rates are typically around 5 per cent.
