Diabetes therapy could bring hope of cure

A fresh type of type 1 diabetes treatment is being made available to a small group of patients in the UK. Experts are already forecasting that the novel treatment could eventually lead to a way of curing the disease.

The government has provided almost £10 million of funding in order to offer cell transplants to diabetics suffering from type 1 diabetes . Experts believe that the therapy will one day be able to be refined and lead to a total cure of the disease.

Type 1 affects a small proportion of the overall diabetic population, the majority of which have type 2. There are, however, some 250,000 type 1 diabetics in the UK. Type 1 usually develops in childhood and requires daily insulin to treat.

The chief executive of Diabetes UK, Douglas Smallwood, reportedly commented: "The decision to fund this programme will be life-changing for some people."
