Liver protein level may indicate diabetes

Thu, 10 Jul 2008
According to a report from UCSD researchers, older people who have high levels of liver protein face a two-fold risk of developing type 2 diabetes .

The lead author of the study, Dr. Joachim Ix, was reported as commenting: "This opens a whole new chapter in our approach to understanding and preventing diabetes ."

At this point, the protein could simply be a market for other processes relating to diabetes, but the study could indicate why obese people are more likely to develop diabetes .

Ix reportedly concluded: "The next step is to verify the findings in other populations, particularly people who are middle-aged, and potentially begin work to identify promising medications ."
