Thu, 24 Jul 2008
Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca PLC, who make diabetes drugs, have applied to get a new drug application passed by the Food and Drug Administration in America. Astra have also submitted the drug to European authorities for marketing clearance.

Both the European Medicines Agency and the US Food and Drug Administration will decide whether the drug Onglyza is suitable for release to people with diabetes . The drug, created with partner Bristol-Myers Squibb is tipped to be a blockbuster by drug analysts.

The two companies have been working together to develop new drugs for type 2 diabetes since January 2007. The drug that may be released is called saxagliptin, Onglyza being the trade name created by the company.
