Major public spending on diabetes

Wed, 23 Jul 2008
Canada faces a serious and growing diabetes problem, and each area is fighting the disease in different ways. The Health Minister of Canada, David Caplan, told a news conference in Toronto that Ontario would spend $741 million in the next four years to fight diabetes.

Diabetes causes a healthcare burden both in treatment and management of the disease and the health complications associated with it. A variety of healthcare solutions for Ontario are proposed.

In September, over 1,300 Ontario adults with type 1 diabetes could be eligible to receive free insulin pumps . Furthermore, an online registry is planned to assist people with diabetes in the management of their condition and to help healthcare professionals.

Caplan reportedly commented: "This tool will give people living with the disease the power to actively manage the disease in partnership with their health care team and providers. The end result will be faster diagnosis and faster treatment with Ontarians living with diabetes ."
