A report from the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that as many as 8 per cen of the US population now has diabetes . Some 24 million people in America are now diagnosed as diabetic .
The CDC report was based on 2007 data, and also estimated some 57 million people with pre-diabetes . And therefore a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes . However, the report also revealed the positive fact that the number of people unaware of their condition fell from 30 per cent to 25 per cent.
The director of the CDC diabetes division, Dr. Ann Albright, was reported as commenting: "It is concerning to know that we have more people developing diabetes, and these data are a reminder of the importance of increasing awareness of this condition, especially among people who are at high risk. On the other hand, it is good to see that more people are aware that they have diabetes ."
