Surgery for type 2 diabetes

A recent study presented at the 25th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery indicates that people with type 2 diabetes who had the treatment were more able to keep blood glucose at prescribed levels than those taking normal diabetes medicine .

A Wisconsin research team surveyed groups of diabetics, many of whom had had laproscoptic gastric bypass surgery. The team examined blood glucose levels over a three year period to generate conclusions.

Shanu Kothari, study co-author, reportedly commented: "The data continues to support the effectiveness of bariatric surgery in treating Type 2 diabetes in morbidly obese patients. Clearly, conventional medical treatment has an important role to play, but surgery should also be presented as an option to appropriate patients."
