Alarming Australian diabetes research

According to a recent piece of alarming Australian diabetes research, almost a third of people with diabetes in Australia will die in the next decade. The research was presented at an international diabetes conference, and paint a grim future for mortality amongst diabetics in Australia.

Clinical pharmacologist Professor Danny Liew, of St. Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, was reported as commenting: "We didn't know what to expect from the study but it's true to say these are quite compelling figures. The outlook for diabetics is not good and it will only potentially get worse because there will be more people in the future developing it."

Liew reportedly continued: "It's hard for us to say how typical it is of the diabetes population because they have a number of risk factors, but it is definitely close, and the dangers of those risks are clear. Even if you look at it conservatively, the burden of the disease is high."
