Fears of a diabetes epidemic in Ireland

Wed, 18 Jun 2008
According to recent reports from the Republic of Ireland, a diabetes epidemic is sweeping the nation, with some 200,000 adults and children already diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes .

Despite the escalating seriousness of the diabetes situation in Ireland, the Republic still has no national diabetes strategy to address the problem. Like many other health care services around the world, the Department of Health spend some 10 per cent of budget on diabetes care .

The worrying statistics were revealed in dual presentations in Leinster House on Tuesday. The Diabetes Federation of Ireland and the Irish Endocrine Society addressed the diabetes situation in the country.

Ireland, like many other areas of the developed and developing world, is experiencing surging levels of type 2 diabetes, some of which is linked to obesity .
