According to a health warning issued to the Welsh public, by 2025 one in twelve people will be diabetic, as the country gears up for a boom in type 2 diabetes levels.
The report, by Diabetes UK Cymru, indicates that expanding waistlines, indolent lifestyles, and rising levels of obesity will create a surge of new diabetes diagnoses. Type 2 diabetes is usually associated with overweight adults, and complications relating to the disease can be fatal.
The policy officer at Diabetes UK Cymru, Andy Misell, reportedly commented: "We should be very concerned – one myth about diabetes which is still doing the rounds is that it is just a touch of sugar. It may start that way but there are serious long-term consequences of raised blood glucose, especially when accompanied by other problems like high blood pressure and cholesterol .
He reportedly continued: "There is a very strong case for nipping the problem in the bud now by supporting younger people to adopt a healthy lifestyle in the hope that people will avoid or postpone the onset of type 2 diabetes . Otherwise this will cause a pretty substantial problem for the health service and will be difficult and expensive to manage."
