High level of unaware diabetics in London

Tue, 25 Mar 2008
According to statistics released by the leading UK diabetes charity, Diabetes UK, as many as 70,000 people in London have type 2 diabetes but are unaware that they have the disease, thereby increasing their risk of developing complications.

To address the problem, Diabetes UK have taken their innovative Measure Up campaign on the road, visiting five separate locations throughout London. At the sessions, visitors will be given free diabetes tests, information and advice. The Measure Up campaign is partnered with NHS London.

The purpose of the campaign is to get people to measure up and assess their risk of diabetes, and spread awareness about who is the most at risk of developing diabetes. As many as 300,000 Londoners are already diagnosed as diabetic .

Risk factors for diabetes include ethnicity, large waist measurements, age and family history. For more information relating to diabetes symptoms and what to do if you think you have diabetes, please see the links below. Diabetes is a common problem in the UK, and early diagnosis is important to reduce the risk of complications.
