Diabetes epidemic spiralling

A recent study published in The Lancet indicates that diabetes could be a spiralling epidemic, and that it will affect nearly 400 million people by 2025. Exceeding WHO (World Health Organization) and IDF (International Diabetes Federation) estimates, the whopping total was reported in a special edition of the Lancet.

The Lancet said that diabetes accounts for one in every 20 deaths worldwide, with the future burden on healthcare providers likely to be huge. However, with research findings indicating the possibility of much improved treatments in the near future, the challenge is on to make up some ground on the disease.

The NHS is apparently making good progress in diabetes treatment, with a spokesman reportedly commenting: "The number of people getting the key tests and measurements to help prevent or delay the complications of diabetes is rising year on year and in the last two years alone we have identified an extra 200,000 people with undiagnosed diabetes. However, we know we still have a long way to go to ensure that everyone with diabetes receives high quality care that meets individual needs and goals."
