A recent study conducted in China indicates that brief and intense insulin treatment could delay the progression of type 2 diabetes .
Those patients provided with this course of insulin injections were achieving better blood glucose results than those given oral diabetes drugs . The trial, published in the Lancet, may have a role to play in treatment of patients.
Early stage insulin intervention is rarely used in the UK at this stage, but Diabetes UK (the leading UK diabetes charity ) said that this approach could be efficient for some patients.
A care advisor at Diabetes UK, Pav Pank, was reported as commenting: "The research shows that considering using insulin early when people are first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes might be an additional way to achieve good diabetes management . Nevertheless decisions about treatment need to be made on an individual basis for each patient."
