Cow milk could increase diabetes risk

Mon, 12 May 2008
According to a recent study, drinking infant formula manufactured using cow’s milk could up the risk of developing type 1 diabetes .

The study, which agrees with a Finnish study from the early 1990s, was conducted by the company Anatek-EP in America. A 1993 study in Finland found that babies given dairy products at an early age affects proteins that train the immune system .

This, in theory, mistunes the immune system and destroys cells that produce insulin . The recent research investigated five children with type 1 diabetes . Marci Goldfarb, of Anatek, reportedly commented: "The mistuned immune system mistakenly destroys insulin-producing cells."

A larger scale study in underway to investigate the implications of these findings.
