Diabetes UK comment on advertising bill block

Fri, 02 May 2008
A bill that could have restricted the advertising of junk food products to children, and potentially impacted on diabetes levels, has been blocked. The bill, Food Products (Marketing to Children) failed to progress through Parliament yesterday.

The aim of the bill, supported by leading charity Diabetes UK, was to introduce a 9pm watershed on all TV advertising of foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt. The bill included plans to block advertising junk food to children through other mediums.

The Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, Douglas Smallwood, was reported as commented: " Diabetes UK is pleased that the Private Member’s Bill addresses the subject of childhood obesity . Although we are disappointed that the Bill failed to progress past the Second Reading today, it is encouraging to see the substantial cross-party support that the Food Products (Marketing to Children) Bill received. We believe that the measures in the Bill are an important part of a range of interventions that are needed to tackle the increasing rates of childhood obesity in the UK."
