According to recent reports, insulin pumps used by teenagers to treat type 1 diabetes are linked to injury and death. A study, conducted by the Food and Drug Administration, is sure to create controversy amongst diabetics and healthcare professionals who believe in the devices.
The FDA study maintained that parents should keep a close eye on children using pumps, as malfunctioning devices could be extremely dangerous. Because insulin pumps are regulated by the patient, the study found that many set themselves up to take too much insulin, and that continuous low level doses of insulin could be dangerous in conjunction.
The FDA study, which is published in journal Pediatrics, found some 13 deaths and over 1,500 injuries related to insulin pumps. Insulin pumps are not yet common in the UK, and are prescribed for those with type 1 diabetes .
