Text message for diabetes meds

Tue, 13 May 2008
Doctors in Cincinnati, America are experimenting with a novel text messaging procedure to remind teens and other young diabetics to take their medication . Skipping medication is a dangerous oversight, and the text message reminders could help asthma and kidney disease sufferers, as well as diabetic patients.

Diabetes can be particularly tricky in adolescence, and the pressure of this age may cause many to stop taking their diabetes medication. Not adhering to medication at this age can set the stage of major diabetic complications later on in life.

According to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the more medications are required, and the worse the side effects, the less likely adolescents are to adhere to a strict regime. A study at the hospital will assess the efficiency of providing a daily medication reminder via text message.
