UK Diabetes screening could be cost-effective

Thu, 15 May 2008
According to recent reports, a University of Leicester study has revealed that screening diabetics could create cost benefits in the long run, not to mention improving the lives of those patients screened.

A joint-funded study by the Economic and Social Research Council alongside the Medical Research Council found that screening potential diabetics for risk of type 2 diabetes or IGT (impaired glucose tolerance) and intervening early was a cost-effective treatment strategy for UK patients.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal online comes at an opportune time, as a screening programme by the Department of Health is about to be initiated. A nationwide screening programme will hopefully help in early diabetes identification and intervention, having a major impact on the type 2 diabetes epidemic in the UK.
