Diabetes survey for children launched

According to international diabetes news, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is shortly to launch a nationwide diabetes survey of children . The research will aim to determine how many children with diabetes there are in the UAE, as well as how young children are when they develop the disease.

The UAE Health Ministry has initiated a pilot survey in the northeastern emirate. To glean their results, the survey will seek height and weight figures, as well as body mass index and information about diet and lifestyle.

Once the results have been established, the ministry will compare them with findings from the 2006 World Health Organisation Global School-based Student Health Survey. According to this report, as many as 12 per cent of children aged 13-15 are obese .
