Further calls to ban diabetes drug

A petition to the Food and Drug Administration announced last week has met with a chorus of support in America and around the world. Public Citize, a consumer group, called for life-threatening diabetes drug Avandia to be banned.
The call was accompanied by new treatment guidelines from the American Diabetes Association and their European equivalent. The Public Citizen petition reportedly included the statement: “The FDA is in possession of clear, unequivocal evidence that (Avandia) causes a wide variety of toxicities. Many of these are life-threatening, such as heart attacks, heart failure (and) liver failure.”
However, the manufacturer of the drug. GlaxoSmithKline, have clearly stated that they do not believe Avandia causes liver failure. In fact, when it comes to liver failure, the pharmaceutical company say that Avandia has a good safety record.
