According to recent reports published in the journal Pediatrics, children born to mothers who suffer from gestational diabetes during pregnancy could have twice the risk of poor language development.
The research indicates that those women that develop gestational diabetes are more likely to have a baby who develops language problems, including problems with vocabulary and grammar.
Lead author, professor Ginette Dionee, was reported in the diabetes news as commenting: "As mothers are having their children at a later age and the incidence of obesity in the population is on the rise, the rate of gestational diabetes is clearly increasing. The risk to babies' language development needs to be taken into account ."
