200,000 Scots suffering from diabetes

According to a recent Diabetes UK report that highlighted the diabetic population of the UK, as many as 200,000 Scottish people have diabetes .

This record level of diabetic Scots was unearthed by collecting new figures from GP surgeries. As well as the 200,000 diagnosed diabetics in Scotland, it is thought that thousands more have diabetes and are undiagnosed at this stage.

The figures were a part of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), and Scotland was found to have the largest diabetes rise of 16.7 per cent. This is partly due to diabetes increases, but also better recording of cases.

Diabetes UK made it clear that the increase in diabetes incidence is strongly linked to the obesity crisis.
