Diabetes breath test in development

A new type of breath test is under development by UK scientists . The pioneering new diagnostic test could help to pick up on diseases such as cancer and diabetes .

To reach a conclusion, the new technology analyses how concentrated certain chemicals are in the breath. In relation to diabetes, this means acetone. Currently, urine and blood tests are used to diagnose diabetes, but breath tests are less invasive and cheaper.

Furthermore, over time these tests could provide the potential to diagnose and monitor diabetes and other illnesses. The team, at Swansea University School of Engineering, are positive that their invention could become useful.

Dr. Masood Yousef reportedly commented: "If unique markers for specific diseases can be recognised earlier than traditional techniques, then there is immense potential to revolutionise early disease diagnosis before any symptoms have developed, and without the need for invasive procedures."
