Erectile Dysfunction, one of the complications of diabetes, has been linked with heart attacks . However, GPs are ignoring the risk factor, according to a doctor from the Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham.
Dr. Geoff Hackett has pointed out that many patients who had been referred to him for erectile dysfunction shortly following a heart attack had actually developed ED years before.
ED is thought to double the risk of heart disease, an equivalent risk to that caused by smoking moderately or having a family history of heart disease. According to some recent reports, ED amongst type 2 diabetes patients could be a more accurate predictor of heart disease than either high blood pressure or high cholesterol .
However, ED is apparently not being treated seriously as a complication, and is instead viewed as a lifestyle complaint. The British Medical Journal published the report.
