A group of leading diabetes experts are putting on an open day for people with type 1 diabetes . Patients will be able to learn more about their condition and also find out more about the potential for a cure.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is funding the event, which will be held at the University of Manchester. Professor Neil Hanley will host the event. Together with his wife, Dr. Piper-Hanley, the couple will present their research into pancreas development and beta cell regeneration.
Other experts will discuss their successes with stem cells . Professor Mark Dunne, a stem cell researcher at the university, reportedly commented:
"The aim of the diabetes Open Day is to allow people with an interest in type 1 diabetes to come along and to understand more about the disease from experts in the field. At this meeting there will be a strong focus on stem-cell biology and transplantation, which is particularly relevant, since Manchester was given the go-ahead earlier this year to perform islet transplants for people with diabetes ."
