One of the leading manufacturers of sleep and respiratory medical equipment, ResMed, has urged that greater awareness is needed of the links between type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea .
At the annual meeting of the European Respiratory Society in Berlin, researchers discussed the close links between the two diseases . ResMed expressed support for a recently published report by the International Diabetes Federation which showed the need to recognise OSA.
Sleep apnoea is closely related to type 2 diabetes, and can be a life threatening condition in serious cases. One expert, Professor Rossner, was reported as commenting: "There is a strong need to help people suffering from type 2 diabetes and OSA. A good starting point is to raise awareness among health professionals and members of the diabetes and sleep communities regarding the public health implications of both these conditions."
