A new inquiry into diabetes in Bradford will try to assess what causes the condition, and reduce incidences amongst the population. The inquiry will be conducted by the Bradford Council Health Improvement committee. Previously, this board has reviewed obesity and alcohol as major health problems.
Tens of thousands of people in Bradford suffer from diabetes, and many thousands more, particularly in the Asian community, may have the disease and not be diagnosed. Bradford is also a diabetes deaths hotspot, reporting higher incidences relating to the disease than surrounding areas.
Reasoning behind the review reportedly commented: "It is reported that the NHS spent approximately £5billion or five per cent of its budget treating diabetes in 2003 and this may rise to ten per cent by 2011. It is therefore a timely subject for scrutiny by the Health Improvement Committee, which could build on its previous work on obesity, without duplicating its areas of investigation."
