Massive NHS obesity and diabetes bill

According to new government figures, obesity is costing the National Health Service in London £2.2 billion per annum. The true cost of obesity related diabetes could be much higher, as rates of diabetes and heart problems increase.

The new figures show that the cost of obesity is affecting every Primary Care Trust in the country, clearly showing the cost of being overweight and obese now, and how much more it could cost by 2015.

The figures were released as part of a new campaign called Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives toolkit: A Toolkit for Developing Local Strategies. The scheme will be available to primary care trusts and local authorities to help them to tackle obesity. The toolkit highlights a number of key facts about obesity .

Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, reportedly commented: "The link between obesity and preventable illnesses, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer is undeniable. In England almost two-thirds of adults and a third of children are either overweight or obese; without effective action this could rise to nine in 10 adults and two-thirds of children by 2050."
