A study by researchers at the University of Iowa and from the UK indicates that being exposed to a particular type of chemical commonly found in food and drink containers could increase the risk of both diabetes and heart disease .
The report were gleaned from the first large-scale study of controversial material bisphenol, and how it could affect humans. The Food and Drug Administration, which approved the chemical for use in bottles and containers, continue to claim that the chemical is safe.
Bisphenol, which could increase type 2 diabetes risks, is contained in several type of bottle, including baby bottles and refillable water bottles. BPA is widely used in consumer products. The research team found that those with higher levels of BPA in their urine were over twice as likely to have heart disease or diabetes .
The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
