As many as 20,000 children with type 1 diabetes could benefit from a major change in the way they manage their condition. The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has reviewed insulin pump recommendations, and called for greater access for children and young people.
Currently, just one in 1,000 diabetics in the UK use an insulin pump. This compares to one in seven in Germany and one in Eight in America. A recent study indicates that the quality of life of young type 1 diabetics could be significantly improved through using an insulin pump.
Insulin pumps are relatively modern technology that allows constant administration of insulin. Benefits can include replacing injections, constant and accurate management, sports participation and the freedom to eat according to choice.
Healthcare experts called the widening of NICE guidelines great news for type 1 diabetic children and young people.
