According to recent reports, research teams in America have discovered a way to change adult cells without using stem cells . The discovery could lead to a method of treating diabetes and other diseases .
A research team from Harvard Stem Cell Institute announced that the new technique called direct reprogramming could change simple pancreatic cells in mice into beta cells that produce insulin .
Researcher Doug Melton reportedly commented: "I wake up every day trying to think about how to make beta cells." Melton himself has two children with type 1 diabetes . Of his new discovery, Melton reportedly said: "You see the first signs in three days. It's a rapid conversion. A repurposing of the cell quickly."
The technique remains at an early stage, does not replace the need for stem cells, and is not a complete solution for type 1 diabetes .
