According to the first Euro Consumer Diabetes Index, diabetes care in Ireland is ranked ninth in the whole of Europe. Denmark was reportedly at the top of the table, followed by the UK, France and the Netherlands.
To assess diabetes care in Europe, the Diabetes Index compared 26 different performance indicators. From a potential 1000 points, Ireland scored some 733 points, and was summed up as a very competent health system.
Dr. Garrofe, the project manager for the Diabetes Index, was reported as commenting: " Diabetes teams are finding it difficult to cope with the numbers of patients they must see and we see a need for more quality staff (both doctors and nurses). Long waiting times are not acceptable. They increase the risk of complications . We believe that an open and transparent diabetes registry improves care outcomes."
