Diabetes and psoriasis linked

According to a recent diabetes related study, women who suffer from psoriasis also face a greater risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure levels. A research team at the Harvard Medical School pointed out inflammation associated with the skin condition.

The research was published in the Archives of Dermatology. As much as 3 per cent of the population suffer from psoriasis, which is linked to an over-active immune system . The results of the study indicate that women with psoriasis faced a 63% greater likelihood of developing diabetes .

To balance out the risks, the team considered age, body mass index and smoking habits. The researchers reportedly concluded: "These data illustrate the importance of considering psoriasis a systemic disorder rather than simply a skin disease. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying these associations and to find out whether psoriasis therapy can reduce the risk for diabetes and hypertension."
