According to a diabetes research team in the United States, ‘good’ baby fat may protect people from developing type 2 diabetes and obesity, itself a major risk factor for the condition.
Fat is usually thought of as a bad thing in relation to type 2 diabetes . Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for developing the condition. The research has found that there are two types of fat – white fat that stores energy and can cause health issues, and brown fat (abundant in babies and children) that burns calories and uses energy.
A research team at Harvard Medical School found that many adults still retain their brown fat, and that slimmer adults often have more than those with more overall fat. The study was conducted by experts at the Joslin Diabetes Center and published in the New England Journal of Medicine .
The team said that they hoped the finding would open up new therapeutic areas for obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment .
