According to recent diabetes research published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, research teams at the Northwestern University in Chicago are using patients own stem cells to treat their type 1 diabetes .
The author of the study, Dr. Richard Burt, reportedly commented: "Just to be able to take someone and have them insulin -free with normal blood sugars on no medications for many years in the first attempt, you know, is a step forward."
However, the stem cell treatment will only prove effective amongst those people with diabetes who are newly diagnosed and whose immune systems have not entirely destroyed pancreatic beta cells.
The researchers conceded that much more research needs to be done to make the type 1 diabetes treatment a reality for many patients.
