According to diabetes news reports today, GPs in the UK will be given financial rewards for treating diabetes patients, patients with Down’s syndrome and patients with epilepsy. The proposed changes relate to performance and are part of a review by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
New targets for the 2010-11 period will be linked to lowering blood pressure amongst diabetes patients . The changes are part of the Quality and Outcomes Framework, and will reward doctors for giving patients specific check-ups.
At this stage the changes are subject to further consultation, not to mention agreement for doctors. The scheme may help bring up diabetes diagnosis levels, but the key goal is to lessen complications by lowering blood pressure levels.
