A diagnosis with diabetes carries with it a greater risk of diabetes complications . Some of these are well known, such as a greater risk of heart disease and stroke. However, other complications such as retinopathy and infertility are less well known.
Whether you have type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes, there is considerable danger for men to develop a condition called retrograde ejaculation. This occurs when the sperm is not released on ejaculation, and instead flows back down the penis and into the bladder.
The condition can leave a man permanently infertile, and occurs due to damage to the nerve fibres that supply the penis. Dr. David Price, a diabetes expert in Swansea, was reported as commenting: "In terms of public health problems related to diabetes, it is way down the list - cardiovascular and eye disease are much more significant problems."
