According to a report released on Monday by the Canadian Diabetes Association, diabetes in Canada will soar in the next 20 years, with the number of people with diabetes climbing to around 10 per cent of the population.
In the year 2000, some 1.3 million Canadians were diagnosed with diabetes, with a 2010 projected figure of 2.5 million. The report, released with the title: ‘An Economic Tsunami: The Cost of Diabetes in Canada," commented that 3.7 million would have diabetes in Canada by 2020.
The economic tsunami refers to the burden put upon the healthcare system of Canada, with spending skyrocketing in the next ten years. The climbing rates of diabetes were blamed on an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, an ageing population and an increasing rate of obesity .
