According to a recent report, those patients with dementia and diabetes appear to display an alternative pattern of brain injuries compared to those patients who have dementia but no sign of diabetes . The discrepancy was noted in the Archives of Neurology.
According to author Joshua Sonnen MD. the links between diabetes and dementia are well established. A research team from the University of Washington, Seattle, autopsied hundreds of brains to reach their conclusion.
They found two very different brain injury characteristics depending on diabetes presence. The authors reportedly concluded: "These novel characterizations of two apparently different patterns of injury in dementia depending on diabetes mellitus status may have important etiologic and therapeutic implications."
Whether there are further differences between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes brain injuries remains to be seen.
