UK diabetes charity Diabetes UK has pointed out that diabetes cases are climbing all the time, with one person being diagnosed with diabetes every three minutes. The vast majority of diabetes diagnoses are people with type 2 diabetes, a chronic disease linked with obesity .
Diabetes is a very dangerous disease, because long-term complications can easily arise. These can include heart disease, stroke, blindness and kidney failure. Figures indicate that as many as 180,000 people developed diabetes during 2008, way up on 100,000 the previous year.
Chief Executive of Diabetes UIK, Douglas Smallwood, reportedly said: "This week 75 years ago, Diabetes UK was created and although we continue to work tirelessly to improve people's health, diabetes remains one of the biggest health challenges of our time. We must protect the health of the nation by taking urgent steps to further raise awareness of diabetes and its complications."
