According to recent reports in the diabetes news, some ethnic groups and females from lower socio-economic backgrounds could face an increased risk of developing diabetes whilst pregnant.

Some thirty per cent of women who develop GD will also develop type 2 diabetes between 7-10 years afterward. However, amongst some groups of women, this incidence increases to 50 per cent in five years.

To reach their conclusions, a research team at the University of Sydney examined data from 950,000 births in New South Wales. Dr. Van der Ploeg reportedly commented: "Cultural specific interventions should be developed to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes in these women at high risk."
