According to a recent study from the University of Warwick, nurses and GPS should be given the training to provide psychological therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to type 2 diabetes patients struggling to control their blood glucose levels . There is a considerable shortage of psychological therapists, meaning that access is restricted.
The research team reviewed some 35 trials to explore the ways in which psychological treatments could have an effect on type 2 diabetics . In over half the trials, the therapies were administered by psychological therapists, whilst the other half were given by trained general health professionals.
Dr. KumKum Misra, was reported as commenting: "It generally not only improves the doctor-patient relationship but also helps the doctor to build the confidence of the patient to take more responsibility for caring for their problem."
