According to recent research into blood glucose control amongst patients with type 1 diabetes, keeping blood glucose levels at near-normal as quickly as possible after diagnosis would massively improve long-term complications prognosis. The study was reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine .
The study also highlighted that type 1 diabetic outcomes have improved considerably in the last two decades, with insulin advances, blood glucose monitoring advances, and better understanding of blood glucose control .
Lead author Dr. David Nathan was reported in diabetic news as commenting: "The demonstration that near-normal glucose control substantially lowers microvascular and cardiovascular complications has heralded a new era of type 1 diabetes care. The remarkable improvement in long-term outcomes achieved with intensive glucose control should encourage clinicians and patients alike to implement intensive therapy as early in the course of type 1 diabetes as possible."
