Diabetes news reports this morning indicate that some 80 per cent of people with diabetes in Wales need not be suffering. The statistic encompasses some 100,000 people, and was reported by the Welsh arm of Diabetes UK, Diabetes UK Cymru .
The charity said that the vast majority of Welsh diabetics have type 2 diabetes, a disease that could be avoided if people are given enough education and support to make diet and exercise changes.
To respond to the problems, the charity intends to hold a tour of roadshows throughout Wales, the aim being to get people to measure up and assess their diabetes risk . The roadshow will travel across Wales between June and December.
Dai Williams, the national director of Diabetes UK Cymru, reportedly commented: "Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing us today. It is regrettable that 80% of people with type 2 diabetes possibly could have avoided it by making simple but important changes to their lifestyle. This is why I would urge everyone who can to visit a Diabetes UK Measure Up roadshow near them. It could be the best thing you ever do for your health."
