New diabetes research is seeking to develop a radical new vaccine style therapy for diabetes . A research team at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will seek to apply the vaccine to children recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes .
The vaccine functions by curbing the rogue immune cells that cause type 1 diabetes, before patients have to start daily insulin injections . The researchers say that treating children at onset is the best chance possible.
Type 1 diabetes is much less common than type 2 diabetes, but it requires daily insulin injections to stay alive. The research is being conducted by an immunologist at Pittsburgh, Dr. Massimo Trucco. The vaccine is manufactured using the patients’ own blood .
Diabetes experts throughout the world praised the potential of the project.
